Restaurant Review: The Ranbanka Palace - Heritage Hotel

“Rocky and Mayur have ventured out to explore food from all parts of India and curate videos on Askme.com I'm contributing my part by relishing my favorite dishes at Ranbanka Palace and sharing my views with you all!

Built in 1927 for Maharajadhiraj Sir Ajit Singh ji, this magnificent palace hotel captures the essence of the royals of the past. The hotel derives its name from the war cry of the founding family, the Rathore clan. A visit to it can be called as a visit to the history, the times of the kings and colonial influences. Decorated intricately with marble inlays, fireplaces, hunting trophies, divans and jharokhas, this hotel is an entrance to a bygone era.

Address: Ranbanka Palace, Circuit House Road, Jodhpur, Rajasthan 342001

Ranbanka Palace was a part of India's first heritage hotel and is the only property in the blue city to be acknowledged as a ‘Classic Heritage Hotel’ by the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India.

When I was asked to review a restaurant of my choice, sponsored by Askme.com, Ranbanka Palace was the first on my list for its beauty and old-world charms. So I decided to have lunch in this Heritage hotel with a friend of mine and here's how it went:

Food: The restaurant offers mainly three cuisines, namely, Chinese, Indian and Continental with a hint of Italian, both vegan and non-veg. Being a hardcore vegetarian, my choices were limited. My first choice was the Chinese Manchow soup and it was delicious! Served hot, with dried noodles, it was a perfect blend of Chinese flavours. We ordered one Masala Papad from Indian section and Spring rolls from the Chinese section for starters. Yet again, stellar food.

Moving over to the main course, we ordered Paneer Butter Masala and Tandoori roti from the Indian section accompanied with an Onion salad. The curry was a little less spicy with a light gravy but enjoyable. The paneer was perfectly cooked but the gravy lacked the X-factor. Tandoori roti, cooked evenly, blended with the curry was an absolute treat to our taste buds.

For dessert, I decided to take a leap of faith on the quality and taste of food that had been served so far and ordered Tiramisu, an Italian dessert. I hate to say it, but I was thoroughly disappointed. It was nowhere near to good in taste as good as it looked. It was a treat to my eyes until I tasted it, then it became a havoc. I felt as if I was eating cream, that too sour. It didn't justify its meaning, i.e., 'Pick Me Up' in Italian.

Being a luxury hotel, the prices are affordable. The service was fast and balanced. Enjoyed!

Ambience: Ranbanka palace offers you fine dining, both open, outdoor dining and inside. As much as I wanted to have lunch in the open air, near poolside, the heat managed to beat that desire. A few people already dining. Our table was in the centre of the whole restaurant. To our left were other people, and to our right was a long table, put out for buffay. There was a slow, traditional melody playing to match with the peace and calm of the place. It seamlessly blended with the ancient décor.

Staff: Not just the hotel, but the staff too exuded the aura of tradition and rich history. They all were wearing the traditional Marwari clothing, Dhoti-kurta and Safa (Turban). The staff was very attentive and equally responsive. When my cell phone's battery was dying, they brought the charger in less than a minute. Brownie points for that!

Ranbanka Palace is ideal for those who want to soak in the flavours, history and luxury of Royal Marwar. This palace hotel regales and grips with its contemporary offerings. It is the perfect place to explore the history, or should I say, live in it. A great place to dine in, with the love of your life, or your family or friends. Just give it a chance! :)
